The EAVE Autonomous Underwater Vehicle

The Marine Systems Engeineering Laboratory (MSEL) of the
he Autonomous Undersea Systems Institute (AUSI) developed
and fielded one of the first autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), EAVE-EAST
EAVE (Experimental Autonomous VEhicles, East), in the early 1980s. Since that
time, EAVE has evolved in form and capability. The current version of EAVE is
the EAVE-III vehicle, of which MSEL/AUSI has two.

EAVE is an open space-frame vehicle, unlike the torpedo-shaped vehicles that
are increasingly common today. Each shape has its pros and cons. EAVE was
designed as a testbed vehicle, and its shape allows precise positioning and
ease of attaching equipment, for which it trades off speed and endurance.
This is the only picture we have of EAVE at the moment that is in electronic
form (more coming shortly). This is an old version of EAVE. If you visit Walt Disney World's Living Seas attraction,
you'll see this picture in the area talking
about AUVs and ROVs.
